Anxiety Treatment and Assessment

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a mental health condition that causes feelings of unease, worry or fear, that everyone experiences. However, when these feelings persist or become overwhelming, they may indicate an anxiety condition. It’s a serious condition that impacts emotional wellbeing, relationships, and everyday functioning. Anxiety impacts 1 in 4 Australians. Among children and young people, it is the second most prevalent mental disorder, with 1 in 14 experiencing anxiety—some as young as 18 months old. Research shows rates of anxiety are steadily increasing.

What Causes Anxiety?

The causes of anxiety can be caused by a combination of factors rather than a single event. These may include genetics, personality traits, and life experiences like trauma, prolonged stress, or significant changes. Environmental factors—such as family conflict, academic pressure, bullying, or unpredictable routines—can also contribute, especially in children.

The relationship between anxiety and social and environmental factors is complex and bidirectional — meaning it both influences and is influenced by other factors in a two-way relationship. Often, it’s the interaction of several of these elements that leads to the development of an anxiety condition.

How Effective Treatment Helps Anxiety

Anxiety treatments work—and the evidence backs it up. An anxiety assessment is the first step towards understanding symptoms and finding the right treatment. Conducted by a psychotherapist, it provides insight and diagnosis into different types of anxiety, such as generalised anxiety, social anxiety, or separation anxiety—something that can be difficult to navigate alone.

Because anxiety often has a bidirectional nature—where thoughts, behaviours, and physical symptoms feed into each other—effective treatment targets multiple areas at once. Evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) are proven to reduce anxiety by breaking this cycle: they help reframe unhelpful thought patterns, build emotional resilience, and prevent future setbacks.

Anxiety Signs and Symptoms

Anxiety can show up in many different ways, and it doesn’t always look like worry. Children and young people, especially often struggle to express what they're feeling, so it's important to notice patterns in behaviour, emotions, thoughts, and physical symptoms:

  • Seeking constant reassurance or trouble separating from parents or caregivers

  • Restlessness, fidgeting, or difficulty sitting still; meltdowns or anger outbursts

Feelings

  • Intense fear or panic in specific situations or easily startled or upset

  • Low self-confidence or feelings of shame

  • Mood changes without a clear cause

  • Negative self-talk, fear of failure, perfectionism and fear of making mistakes

  • Overthinking or getting stuck on a thought
